Medications and Alllergy Testing
Some medications interfere with allergy skin testing and must be stopped prior to your appointment. Please review the following list carefully. Stop any of your medications on this list per the following schedule:
One month Zyrtec, Zyrtec D
One week (7 days) Alavert, Alavert D, Allegra, Allegra D, Claritin, Claritin D, Clarinex, Hydroxyzine, Loratadine, Tavist, Tavist D, Vistaril
Three days (72 hours)

Benadryl, brompheniramine, chlorpheniramine, diphenhydramine, Tylenol PM, any over-the-counter cold or allergy medication containing an antihistamine

Astelin and Nasalcrom nasal sprays
-
Tilade and Intal inhalers
-
Singulair, Accolate, and any anti-leukotriene medication
-
Anti-nausea medications such as Compazine, Phenergan, or Tigan

Tranquilizers including Alprazolam, Buspar, chloridiazepoxide, diazepam, Librium, Oxazepam, Serax, Valium, Xanax, and Ativan

Sleeping pills such as Dalmane, Prosom, Restoril

Strattera
-
Antidepressants* - Tricyclics - (Amitriptyline, Desipramine, Doxepin, Elavil, Imipramine, Nortriptyline, Pamelor, Sinequan, Tofranil) and SSRI’s-(Celexa, Effexor, Lexapro, Paxil, Prozac, Sarafem, Zoloft). Wellbutrin does not interfere and may be continued.

Patanol eye drops
*Please talk to our allergy nurse before stopping any antidepressant.
The following medications may be taken prior to skin testing.
- Steroid nasal sprays (Flonase, Nasacort, Nasonex, Rhinocort)
- Prednisone at 20mg or less per day
- NSAIDS - ibuprofen, Advil, Motrin
- Plain Tylenol
- Sudafed (plain decongestant)
The category of drugs known as Beta Blockers, commonly prescribed for heart and blood pressure problems or migraine headache prevention cannot be taken when being skin tested or receiving allergy injections. There is an increased risk of developing a serious reaction. Please review the attached list and discuss this with our staff.
