ABR - Auditory Brainstem Response
What is an auditory brainstem response (ABR) test?
The ABR test is one in which the electrical activity of the brain is monitored as it responds to clicking sounds. Interpretation of the results obtained can be of tremendous help in diagnosis of disorders related to hearing and or symptoms of dizziness, tinnitus and nausea.
How should you prepare for the test?
- Dress comfortable the day of the test
- Women would probably be more comfortable in pants
- Do not wear face lotion or make-up
- Be prepared to relax
What will you expect to experience during the test?
Actually, not much. Your skin will be cleansed, or “prepped” on the forehead and in the ear canals. A monitoring device will be placed on your forehead and earplugs will be placed in your ears. You will then be asked to lay down and relax sleep if you wish! Once the test starts you will hear loud clicking through the earplugs. You will need to stay still and relaxed, with your eyes closed for the test.
How long does the test last?
The test can last approximately one hour.
When will you know the results of the test?
The test findings will be interpreted as soon as possible after the test is complete. You will be scheduled for a follow-up visit with the physician ordering the test to discuss the results.
