VNG Examination Instructions

You are scheduled to have a VNG (Videonystagmography) test. This is a simple, painless procedure to evaluate your balance system. It will require approximately 1-1/2 hours to perform.

In order to complete the test and obtain accurate results, it is important that you read and follow the instructions below.

DO NOT take any of the following medications or beverages for 3 days (72 Hrs.) prior to your examination, unless medically indicated:

  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Anti-dizzyiness pills (Antivert/meclizine)
  • Sleeping Pills
  • Tranquilizers (Valium)
  • Sedatives
  • Muscle relaxants
  • Antihistamines
  • Barbiturates

(See attached list of medications; if you have been taking a medication for more than 6 months, check with your physician.)

  • No eating for four (4) hours before the test.
  • No coffee or other liquids four (4) hours before the test.
  • No smoking for four (4) hours before the test.
  • No make-up; especially in eye area.

Please dress comfortably. Women may want to wear slacks.
